Is an Iguana
Right for you?
Iguanas (Iguanid sp.) are large tropical lizards which can
grow to be over six feet in length. They can pack a painful
bite and have razor-sharp claws. Their diet requirements are
tedious and demanding, and the majority of captive iguanas
suffer from some sort of nutritional disorder. While many
iguanas are quite handleable, some are down-right nasty.
They can be a delight or a terror to have around, depending
on the individual. They require spacious, secure enclosures
with very specific temperature and humidity requirements.

DID YOU KNOW?
Most small
lizards are usually easy to care for and dietary
requirements are not hard to meet. Most (not all) are
somewhat easy to take care of for a first reptile pet. You
still must be willing to learn and take care of your new
pet, but smaller lizards require less space and are far less
dangerous than their larger cousins and are a good choice
for a beginner. All lizards require specialized
lights.
Geckos & Skinks -
Gecko's and skinks are small, usually
harmless lizards and come in an array of different sizes
and colors. A 55 gallon aquarium will be suitable
throughout their entire lives, and dietary requirements are
easily met.
Uromastix & Dragons -
Requiring more space than geckos, these wonderful pets don't require
an enclosure that takes up most of the room and are manageable
throughout adulthood. Diet is a bit more demanding
than smaller lizards which are insectivores.
Chameleons -
Chameleons are an exception, requiring complicated enclosures
and very specific temperature and humidity requirements.
These delicate lizards can't deal with a lot of stress
and are not for the inexperienced or casual pet keeper.
